R. Scott DeCoste

Sheriff’s Office

The Sheriff’s Office is dedicated to maintaining public safety and providing professional law enforcement services throughout the county. Deputies patrol both urban and rural areas, ensuring the safety and security of residents across the entire jurisdiction. The office handles a wide range of responsibilities, including emergency response, criminal investigations, civil processes, and community outreach initiatives. In addition, the Sheriff’s Office manages the county jail and oversees the registration of sex offenders and other individuals who are required by law to register with local authorities.

While the Sheriff’s Office coordinates closely with local emergency services, it does not operate its own communications center. Instead, all administrative and emergency calls are routed through the Cheyenne County, Nebraska Communications Center, which provides dispatching and communication support under a contracted service agreement. This partnership ensures professional call handling and efficient coordination of law enforcement response across the region.

The Sheriff’s Office is staffed by trained deputies and specialized units—such as narcotics detection K-9s—to address challenges like drug trafficking and other criminal activity. Through ongoing training, inter-agency cooperation, and strong community engagement, the Sheriff’s Office works to promote public safety and maintain a high quality of life for all county residents.
