The County Veteran’s Service Office was created by state statute to assist veterans and their dependents in times of need, or to file for all County, State, or Federal benefits earned by the military veteran’s service to a grateful Nation and the State of Nebraska.
The function of the office is to complete the application process for veterans and their dependents in obtaining the benefits they are entitled to receive. The office is directed by the Veterans Service Officer who is appointed by the County Veterans Service Committee. By Nebraska State statute, the appointment of the Service Officer is confirmed by the County Board of Commissioners.
The Service Officer advises and counsels veterans and their families in matters related to the benefits they are entitled to. Knowledge and interpretation of current laws and codes are provided when assisting with applying for County, State and/or Federal Benefits. Emergency financial assistance and veteran’s advocacy are available.
County Veterans Aid Fund (CVA) is a temporary emergency fund to assist veterans, their spouses, and dependents when there is an unforeseen emergency and there are no other resources available. A veteran is any person who served on active duty, received an Honorable Discharge, and served during a recognized period of conflict. Applicants may request assistance with shelter, food, and utilities. Application is made through the County Veteran Service Officer and must meet the requirements of the County Veterans Services Committee which includes residency requirements and a proven financial need.
Flag Holders are available to the family of any deceased Veteran, buried in Deuel County who served during “war time” and received an Honorable Discharge. One marker is provided to the family at no cost.

- Burial benefits include payment assistance to cover burial expenses, headstones/markers, opening and closing the grave, a Presidential Memorial Certificate, a gravesite in any VA National Cemetery with available space which includes perpetual care.
- Home Loan Guaranties (loans are approved by lending institutions) the guarantee is documentation that VA backs the loan.
- Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) if you’re the surviving spouse, child, or parent of a service member who dies in the line of duty, or the survivor of a Veteran who dies from a service-related injury or illness, you may be able to get a tax-free monetary benefit.
- VA Survivors Pension offers monthly payments to qualified surviving spouses and unmarried dependent children of wartime Veterans who meet certain income and net worth limits set by Congress.
